Leprechauns, clovers, pots of gold and rainbows. This is what St. Patrick’s Day is for kids and preschoolers. So that makes these prewriting strips even more exciting for kids who are learning to hold a pencil and follow the lines.
St. Patrick’s Day Prewriting Strips
Do you know how important prewriting activities are? It might seem silly for kids to be tracing the dotted line in a variety of swirls and turns, but this is one of the best ways that children can strengthen their muscles and skills to allow them to proceed to handwriting in the way that we think of handwriting.
The purpose is to show their hand muscles and their brain how to manipulate the flow of the pencil to create different shapes and lines. Writing letters can be difficult for children if they are just thrown into writing an A or B, but using prewriting tools can help them immensely.
Even if your child is already writing letters and numbers, these prewriting strips can help strengthen their handwriting skills. Repetitive motions will help train their hands and brain to be able to write letters and numbers properly.
Prepping This Activity
This activity is super simple to prep. After printing, cut the strips out. They are each in their own box, so this part is easy.
If you would like to laminate these strips, you could then use them over and over through the course of your St. Patrick’s Day week. If you laminate them, use dry erase markers or crayons to write on them.
If you don’t want to laminate, you could also put them in sheet protectors or dry erase pockets.
Alternatively, you could also just give the paper itself to your child and they can use a pencil or crayon to write on it.
Kids will love matching up the St. Patrick’s Day themed pictures by tracing the lines. They won’t even realize how much they are learning and strengthening their muscles, because it looks like a game!
